CBI raids Rajya Sabha secretariat over fake ticket

CBI raids Rajya Sabha secretariat over fake tickets produced by MPs

The CBI has conducted raids in Parliament and booked a Bihar MP in an emerging scandal of fake air tickets and boarding passes used by lawmakers to claim special privileges.

For the first time ever, the agency has conducted raids at the Rajya Sabha secretariat over fake travel claims made by MPs to avail their quota of free tickets.

All MPs get 34 free air tickets a year for domestic flights, paid for by taxpayers, meant to be used so MPs can visit constituencies and other areas on work.

CBI sources say flag carrier Air India also has a role in issuing fake tickets and boarding passes to politicians and government officials.

The agency has filed an FIR against Janata Dal United MP Anil Sawhney, who allegedly produced fake boarding passes for purported flights to Port Blair, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which cost up to Rs. 1.35 lakh. The CBI has also raided his homes in Delhi and at Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

Mr Sawhney is one of the nine MPs being probed for claiming reimbursement based on fake travel documents, in what has now come to be known as the LTC (Leave Travel Concession) scam involving not just politicians but also government officials, airline staff and travel agents.

The scam surfaced in March when Air India was alerted about the arrest of a man at Kolkata airport with 600 blank boarding passes of the airline.
